Little Cayman Beach Resort & Sunset House

Little Cayman Beach Resort

LCBR was my second destination in the Cayman Islands.  The Cayman Airways plane touched down on the airstrip surrounded by lush green trees and shinning water giving me my first glimpse of the 1 mile x 10 mile beautiful island of Little Cayman.  Less than 200 people live here on a permanent basis.  From that moment on, I felt welcomed by all the friendly people I met.

There is plenty to do besides scuba diving on Little Cayman. A leisurely stroll along the scenic sandy beach is enjoyable exploring the shoreline while listening to the ocean sounds of the Caribbean. Hang out in one of the lounge chairs surrounding the large pool in the courtyard. Take a short walk to the museum to meet the resident Iguanas.  Make sure you get the personal tour enhancing your visit by learning about the local denizens. A little farther down the road is the Gladys B Howard National Trust Visitors Centre. Don’t miss this wonderful building full of artwork from locals, fun facts about the flora & fauna, and gifts. Walk up the stairs to the viewing platform to use the complimentary telescope.  The protected Booby Pond is full of red-footed Booby birds and Frigate birds living in tenuous harmony. Borrow a free bicycle to ride to ride around the 10-mile-long island.  There is great snorkeling on the East end of the island.

The resort has 40 rooms, 12 with Ocean Views on two levels. My room was spacious and clean with a comfortable bed, AC, & coffee maker. Three meals per day were served during designated time periods. The buffet-style meals were outstanding!  They must use Michelin chefs on their staff.  Fresh home made desserts were available for lunch & dinner. Every dining room attendant knew my name within a day making feel like I was the most important person in the dining area.  A friendly open-air bar serving snacks all day & evening is the gathering place when you’re not diving or lounging by the sun-baked pool.

Diving was made easy with Reef Divers.  They have an efficient and well-staffed operation just a few steps from any room. Reef Divers is known as “Valet” diving for good reason.  Once you take your equipment to the dockside location, they handle all your gear every day, every dive. No lockers are required. The drying room is locked each night for security although theft is non-existent on Little Cayman. They offer complimentary computers to each diver. Each boat has a “head” and fresh towels.

Go Deep Scuba is traveling to LCBR in September of 2020.

Sunset House on Grand Cayman

I visited the Sunset House on Grand Cayman, staying for three nights and diving for two days. Getting there was fairly easy flying out of SFO directly to Denver, then catching a direct flight on Cayman Airways to Grand Cayman.  I spent about nine hours combined on each leg of the journey.

I was greeted by the Sunset House manager, Emma, who gave me a tour of the facility including each room and suite.  They have something for everybody, from budget priced accommodations above the office to beautifully remodeled ocean front suites with up three adjoining rooms. The “Signature” Suites with Cathy Church photos beautifully displayed, were especially welcoming. Each room had a TV, phone, coffee maker. No worries about drinking the water directly from the tap.

Cathy Church is an acclaimed photographer in the scuba diving community.  She has a wonderful shop at the resort full of stunning photographs.  You can purchase them right on the spot.  They have a friendly staff to help with any equipment needs and even offer classes.

The open air bar was a friendly gathering place for resort guests and locals.  They allow smoking, but the open format made it easy to tolerate and they offer a non-smoking section.

The 5-star PADI Sunset Divers shop is conveniently located with easy walking distance of the the boat dock, equipment stations, and rooms. They provide Nitrox on the boat and help you analyze each tank. They also provide a locker at no charge, including your own key & lock.
